Life is a full time job. Through technology, societies develop means to subvert the work they deem to be mundane. A hundred years ago that meant flipping a switch instead of lighting a fire; these days it might refer to whether your GPS talks to you or not. But for all of our achievements, we are still depressed, angry, unsure, lonely and so forth. In some parts of rural Mexico, growing corn is still a highly valued tradition. It’s more than just an economic staple of the country; it is believed that by watching corn grow one learns to be patient. What do we do that teaches us patience? Wait for our iPhones to sync? Our microwave dinners to be ready? We live and die by a linear model of time, a self-imposed burden which perhaps pushes us further and further from reality.
